VOTED AS AMERICA'S TOP UROLOGISTS A Division of Westchester Medical Group At the Center for Robotics, Laparoscopy, and Advanced Urology, we pride ourselves on always being up-to-date with the latest urologic literature. As such, there has been recent data that shows some promise in helping restore erectile function postoperatively with penile rehabilitation protocols. The following is what we advise our patients interested in penile rehabilitation. Penile Rehabilitation After your catheter is removed on the first postoperative visit, you may be prescribed medications, a VED (Vacuum Erection Device), or both. This is to encourage blood flow to the penis. You MAY have been prescribed one of the following medications to encourage blood flow to the penis. Take as directed below! ( ) Cialis - take (1) one tablet every 3rd day for 3 weeks
CAUTION: You may NOT take a nitroglycerin for 48 hrs after Cialis! If you experience chest pain while on these medications, notify any providers that are caring for you! If you experience any of the following side effects from the medication, STOP the medication and notify us:
If you were prescribed a VED, starting 4-6 weeks post operatively, you should begin using the device on a daily basis prior to taking a shower. Keep the pubic hair around the base of the penis trimmed to facilitate a good seal. Instructions: When you have reached an erection with the device, hold the erection for 20 seconds and repeat 3 times. Do not rush through this! Tightness and pressure are normal but you should not feel pain. If you do, release the pump and try again slowly!
