The Sonablate 500 is a revolutionary device using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to treat prostate cancer. It is the first and only truly non-invasive procedure for treating prostate cancer. As opposed to other HIFU machines, patients do not have to have a TURP procedure or any other surgery prior to treatment with the Sonablate. The Sonablate® 500 system uses ultrasound imaging for treatment planning and monitoring, and Split-Beam HIFUTM and Single-Beam HIFUTM for targeted, noninvasive tissue treatment. The proprietary HIFU Simu-planTM therapy treatment software allows the surgeon to select multiple treatment zones as necessary for a doctor-directed, computer-controlled treatment. Also, it uses the same transducer to capture images of the prostate and deliver the treatment, thus allowing the physician to tailor the treatment to the patient’s unique needs. Treatment with the Sonablate 500 divides the gland into six treatment zones for more precise ablation The Sonablate works by delivering the ultrasound waves through a single transducer. The HIFU waves are delivered into a targeted area of the prostate, the focal point, and this raises the temperature of the tissues in the gland to 90 degrees Celsius very quickly. This destroys the tissues in that area, and the doctor can move the treatment to the next focal point. The same transducer that delivers the treatment also captures images of the prostate in real-time, which allows the doctor to pinpoint the areas of treatment on an individual patient basis. With this real-time imaging technology, no two patients receive the same treatment. The Sonablate divides the prostate into six treatment zones, and then uses the ultrasound waves to ablate the entire prostate gland, effectively destroying the cancer as well. Prostate cancer treatment with the Sonablate 500 starts with the doctor capturing initial images of the prostate. These images are used to plan out the treatment using Simul-Plan Therapy Planning. Once the treatment is planned, the same transducer delivers split beam HIFU to the targeted areas with a click of the mouse. The images are continually updated so that the doctor can change the treatment as the gland begins to be destroyed. The Sonablate® 500 is being studied in clinical trials for use in the treatment of prostate cancer in the United States and is not approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. HIFU with the Sonablate® 500 is authorized for use for the treatment of prostate cancer in Canada, Argentina and the Dominican Republic. It is also available in the Bahamas and Mexico.
