VOTED AS AMERICA'S TOP UROLOGISTS A Division of Westchester Medical Group WHY CHOOSE HIFU In our practice, we choose to individualize the treatment to each individual. Each man’s cancer is unique and each man has specific expectations. Several variables need to be considered when discussing appropriate treatment options. Prostate cancer is not just a question of whether you have it or not. One must analyze the Gleason’s score, amount of cancer present in the biopsy, clinical stage and prostate size. Both Dr. Boczko and Dr. Blair believe that an extensive review of the multiple treatment options available for prostate cancer should be had with the patient and his family, including the risks, benefits and outcomes. HIFU is a relatively new option for the treatment of prostate cancer and for now, can only be done outside the United States. It is done as an outpatient procedure under spinal anesthesia. When performing HIFU on our patients, the treatment can be monitored using real time imaging captured by the treatment delivery device. This allows us to know when the target temperature is reached and when the gland has been effectively destroyed. This provides pinpoint accuracy throughout the procedure, making HIFU highly effective when compared to other, more invasive procedures. The Sonablate® 500 is being studied in clinical trials for use in the treatment of prostate cancer in the United States and is not approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. HIFU with the Sonablate® 500 is authorized for use for the treatment of prostate cancer in Canada, Argentina and the Dominican Republic. It is also available in the Bahamas and Mexico.
